The idea of creating the Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM) arose during peace talks in Rome between Frelimo and Renamo in 1992. The Catholic Church offered to establish a university in central and northern Mozambique as a contribution to peace and reconciliation. This proposal was accepted by both parties, and the UCM was officially founded in 1995. The UCM opened its doors to students in 1996 with two faculties: Economics and Management in Beira and Law in Nampula.
