University of Rwanda

The University of Rwanda (UR) was established in September 2013 by a law that repealed the laws establishing the National University of Rwanda and the country’s other public higher education institutes, creating the UR in their place. The UR is the largest education institution in Rwanda and is ranked number one by the Higher Education Council. The Adventist University of Central Africa (AUCA) was founded in 1978 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The university was initially located in Mudende, Rwanda, but was forced to close in 1994 due to the Rwandan genocide. The University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) was founded in 2015 by Dr. Paul Farmer, a renowned physician and anthropologist who dedicated his life to improving health care for the poor and marginalized. UGHE is located in Butaro, Rwanda, and its campus was inaugurated by the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, in January 2019. UGHE is a new kind of university focused on delivering the highest quality of health care by addressing the critical social and systemic forces causing inequities and inefficiencies in health care delivery.
