Established in 1975, the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) originally had a mandate to educate Physicians, Medical Scientists, and Medical Laboratory Technologists. The foundational program was a 3-year BSc in Human Biology, serving as a prerequisite for the three specified categories of programs. Currently, the focus of the School has shifted, with a primary emphasis on undergraduate Physician training and postgraduate education in Medical Sciences.
The university has a student population of over 30,000, including over 2,000 international students. The university offers over 100 undergraduate and postgraduate programs. KNUST-SPH was formally founded in 2014 with an emphasis on public health graduate studies.
