In 1993, the University of Buea’s School of Medicine was established. The WHO has accredited only one medical school in Cameroon, and that institution. A six-year programme culminating in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree is available through the institution. The school was established in response to the need for more doctors in Cameroon.
The University of Buea was chosen as the site for the new medical school because it is located in the English-speaking part of the country, and because it has a strong academic reputation. In 2008, the school opened a new teaching hospital, and in 2015, the school began offering a Master of Public Health degree program.
