Kabale University School of Medicine

Overview

The Kabale University School of Medicine (KABSOM) is a public medical school in Uganda. It was established in 2015 and is one of the six public medical schools in the country. KABSOM is located on the main university campus at Kikungiri Hill, in Kabale Municipality. The clinical departments of the medical school are located at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, the teaching hospital of the school.

The MBChB program is a five-year program that leads to a medical degree. Students who graduate from the program are eligible to apply for a one-year internship at a recognized teaching hospital. After the internship, students are eligible to register with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practioners’ Council (UMDPC) and practice as medical doctors.

Medicine Programs

Medicine is a broad field that encompasses the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. Medicine programs are designed to prepare students for careers in the healthcare industry, either as physicians, surgeons, or other medical professionals. There are two main types of medicine programs: undergraduate and graduate. Undergraduate programs, such as bachelor’s degrees in biology, chemistry, or biochemistry, provide students with the foundation in science and mathematics that they need to succeed in medical school.

Public Health Programs

Public health programs work to prevent and control the spread of communicable diseases, such as measles, mumps, and influenza. This includes conducting immunization campaigns, educating the public about disease prevention, and tracking and responding to outbreaks. Public health programs also promote the prevention and management of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. This includes educating the public about healthy lifestyle choices, providing access to preventive care services.
