Somali National University (SNU) is one of the leading medical schools in Somalia. It was founded in 1971 and offers a six-year undergraduate program in medicine and surgery. The school’s mission is to train competent and compassionate physicians who will serve the people of Somalia and beyond. The following organizations accredit the School of Medicine at SNU: Somali Medical and Health Professionals Council (SMHPC) and Association of Medical Schools in Africa (AMSA).
The first two years are spent studying basic sciences, such as anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. The next three years are spent studying clinical medicine, including internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics, and gynecology. The final year is spent in an internship program at a teaching hospital.
